Disease control for shrimp exports to Australia

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has issued a Decision on controlling, certification of disease-free and food safety for shrimp and shrimp products exported to Australia.

According to the new decision, for shrimp raw materials before processing, the enterprises actively take measures to control the white spot disease and yellow head disease for shrimp raw materials before processing.

For batches of post-processing shrimp, the company would get sample for each batch of post-processing under Australian regulations and send the sample to a laboratory designated by the MARD for testing white spot disease and yellow head disease.

In addition, the inspection and sampling of food safety for shrimp and shrimp products export that have not been cooked or deep-processed, the enterprise provides the results of testing for white spots and yellow head disease of the batches of produce to the inspection agencies of the Viet Nam National Agro–Forestry–Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD) for food safety inspection in accordance with Australian regulations and issue certificates to each export shipment in accordance with the procedure.

For cooked and deep-cooked shrimp and shrimp products, NAFIQAD would inspect food safety in accordance with Australian regulations and issue a certificate for each export shipment as regulation.

The MARD also assigned NAFIQAD to guide the processing enterprises those export shrimp to Australia, to update and announce the food safety criteria for samples of foodstuffs to be exported to Australia, to issue certificates of food safety and disease-free status for each batch of shrimp exported to Australia according to regulations.

At the same time, the Department of Animal Health would provide training and certification to the staff of the enterprises on the sampling procedures in accordance with the World Organization for Animal Health, while publish list of laboratories designated by the MARD for testing white spot disease and yellow head disease on shrimp, to announce the establishment of aquaculture farms/areas which have been recognized or supervised the epidemic control for yellow head disease and white spot disease.

In addition, processing enterprises exporting shrimp products to Australia must ensure the records of traceability of each shipment. Moreover, it is necessary to have an effective plan for self-control of raw materials source that is free of white spot disease and yellow head disease before processing. Shrimp farming establishments need to be informed to supply raw materials for processing enterprises and register with the Department of Animal Health to be guided, designed and implemented a monitoring program to build safe culturing facilities for white spots disease, yellow head and other diseases as required by Australia.
