Vietnamese tra fish export market saw a positive trend

In the first seven months of this year, Viet Nam's tra fish export turnover reached US$ 1 billion, an increase of 8.2 per cent over the same period last year. This indicated a growth rate in Vietnamese tra fish export market.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), as of July 2017, the total export value of tra fish reached US$ 1 billion, an increase of 8.2 per cent over the same period last year. In the top 10 major markets, except for export value to the EU market fell by the most 23.5 per cent over the same period in 2016, export to some potential markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia saw a strong growth rate.

The US

The US is currently the largest importer of Vietnamese tra fish, accounting for 22 per cent of total tra fish export value. At the same time, it is the market with highest import price. Viet Nam's tra fish export to the US market reached US$ 220.8 million in the first seven months of 2017, up 3.3 per cent over the same period last year.

However, Vietnamese tra fish exporters were facing many challenges when exporting to this market such as technical and commercial barriers. At present, only 3 - 4 main tra fish businesses continue standing firm in this market with export products mainly frozen tra fish, frozen roll tra fish, head off tra fish, and frozen whole tra fish.

China (inld. Hong Kong)

In the first seven months of 2017, Viet Nam’s tra fish export to China – Hong Kong reached US$ 206.1 million, up 46.2 per cent over the same period last year. In early 2017, the price of seafood in China increased and so did the price of white meat fish, including tra fish.

Other markets

Tra fish exports to Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Saudi Arabia in the first seven months of the year increased by 59.3 per cent, 25.7 per cent, 8.9 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively. The sharp decline in tra fish exports to EU market in 3 consecutive years has forced Vietnamese tra fish enterprises to shift their export to these markets.

Production

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s reports, although the price of tra fish raw material in this year was quite high, tra fish farmers limited their stocks due to concerns about unstable price and output.

Regarding farming area, tra fish farming area in the first seven months of the Mekong River Delta provinces was estimated at 3,921.6 ha, down 5.4 per cent over the same period. Harvested yield was estimated at 729.7 thousand tons, up 1.2 per cent over the same period.

Dong Thap province recorded the largest farming area of 1,688.3 hectares, yielding 250.9 thousand tons, increased by 14.2 per cent over the same period last year. This offset the decline of the provinces of Can Tho (80.7 thousand tons, down 4.6 per cent), Ben Tre (104.6 thousand tons, down 12.6 per cent).

The price of tra fish seed market also saw a slight decrease of VND 5 - 10 thousand per kg compared with that in early May, 2017. In the provinces of Vinh Long, An Giang, and Can Tho, the price of white meat fish ranged from VND 21,500 to 23,000 per kg. From July 25th to August 20th, the price of white meat grade I varied from VND 23,500 - 25,600 per kg, grade II ranged from VND 22,400 to 23,400 per kg.
